Is EMDR just for PTSD?
There is a misconception that EMDR is only used to treat PTSD. Although EMDR has been found to be an effective therapy for PTSD, it can also be helpful to treat many other issues as well.
The way that EMDR works is to determine the negative beliefs that have been formed through our experiences. Sometimes those messages are created through a traumatic experience and other times those messages are formed from our observations and perceptions from everyday experiences and interactions.
Within EMDR Therapy, the EMDR therapist and client work together to identify the client's negative beliefs and how those beliefs were formed. Once identified, clients process through those difficult past experiences and replace the negative beliefs with more positive or adaptive beliefs.
Most people have experienced some extent of negative beliefs about themselves in their lifetime. Since this is a common experience, many could benefit from EMDR Therapy.
